Fraud

Start-up fees that signal a fake job

Longer note · updated October 2026

The clearest sign of a fake job offer is simple: it costs you money to begin. Genuine work pays you; it doesn't charge you.

The forms it takes

  • Registration or activation fees. Paid before you can see any work.
  • Training packages. Required courses sold by the "employer".
  • Starter kits. Equipment or stock you must buy from them.
  • Deposits. Balances you top up to unlock tasks or earnings.

Other signs

Unrequested messages, pay far above normal for simple tasks, contact only through private apps, and pressure to decide today.

What to do

Don't pay. Stop replying and report the account. If you've already paid, call your bank straight away and report it to the police or your country's fraud reporting service.
